STATEMENT
I believe portraiture to be my only real interest in painting as it deals with humanity and its essence, my foremost interests, by directly portraying that which is irreducible and stubbornly human. Thus I have concentrated most of my artistic efforts in this area. My portraits often try to represent the affection that the human face both simultaneously reflects and tries to hold back. I believe this contradiction has led me to a mysterious path in which I intend to capture and explore that which has nothing to do with the human face, transcending it while finding affections within other elements, many a time external to the subject which is being represented.
Intuition suggests that these affections, alien to the human face, can express aspects that do not allow for the contradiction which I previously referred to, as there is no conscious effort of the person who is being represented to hide anything. This has conducted me to paint still life with portraiture intentions as I have encountered a vast territory for my explorations within this theme and the fascinating possibility of acknowledging people in relation to time and memory, both through the objects that surround them and through the traces they imprint into their surroundings. |
